"SWITEZIANKA" in English :)

Witam !!!

Adam Mickiewicz, Switezianka
translated to English by Krzysztof Sobolewski, as „The Fair Maiden From Switez”

Jakiż to chłopiec piękny i młody, Who is this lad so handsome and young?
Jaka to obok dziewica? Who is that maiden so fair?
Brzegami sinej Świteziu wody Who at the moonlight, by waters livid
Idą przy świetle księżyca. Of Świteź awalking are?

Ona mu z kosza daje maliny, With razzes from basket she dowers him,
a on jej kwiatki do wianka; He gives her the blooms to her wreath;
Pewnie kochankiem jest tej dziewczyny, Suppose, that his true lover is she,
Pewnie to jego kochanka. As he is the sweetheart of her.

Każdą noc prawie, o jednej porze, Nearly each night, at the same hour
Pod tym się widzą modrzewiem, Upon this larch they two meet,
Młody jest strzelcem w tutejszym borze, The lad is a hunter in forest near,
Kto jest dziewczyna? - ja nie wiem. And who is the lass? I don't wit ...

Skąd przyszła - Darmo śledzić kto pragnie; Where has she come from? In vein one traces;
Gdzie uszła? - nikt jej nie zbada. Where's gone she - Who's there to observe?
Jak mokry jaskier wschodzi na bagnie, As crowfoot wet in swamp she arises,
Jak ognik nocny przepada. As glimmer of night she’s a-fading.

"Powiedz mi piękna, luba dziewczyno, "Tell me my darling, my maiden sweet,
Po co nam te tajemnice? Must in mystery we live?
Jaką przybiegłaś do mnie drożyną? What path to me thy feet have lead,
Gdzie dom twój? Gdzie są rodzice?" Where's home thy, and parents of thee?

"Minęło lato, zżółkniały liścia, Yellowed the leaves, the summer gone by,
I dżdżysta nadchodzi pora, And comes rainy season along,
Zawsze mam czekać twojego przyjścia Must I await each arrival thine,
Na dzikich brzegach jeziora? On the lake's haggard shore?

"Zawszeż po kniejach jak sarna płocha "Always as deer reed among the woods
Jak upiór błądzisz w noc ciemną? Through dark night as a phantom roamst thee,
Zostań się lepiej z tym, co cię kocha, Oh, better stay with the one that loves thou,
Zostań się, o luba! ze mną" Oh, darling my, stay with me!"
"Chateczka moja stąd niedaleka "My little log-cabin from hence stands near,
Pośrodku gęstej leszczyny; Amongst the filber-trees thickset,
Jest tam dostatkiem owoców, mleka, Galore we have there of fruits and milk,
Jest tam dostatkiem źwierzyny" And plenty of game one finds thither"

"Stój, stój - odpowie - hardy młokosie "Stop, stay!", replies she, "my lad so lofty,
Pomnę, co ojciec rzekł stary: My father old said, I'll remind:
Słowicze wdzięki w mężczyzny głosie, Nightingale's grace is in man's voice,
A w sercu lisie zamiary. But foxiness in his heart.

"Więcej się waszej obłudy boję, More of your cant I am afraid,
Niż w zmienne ufam zapały, Than trust I the fervor of thine;
Może bym prośby przyjęła twoje, Maybe thy boon I would embrace,
Ale czy będziesz mnie stały?" But would you be a true love of mine?

Chłopiec przyklęknął, chwycił w dłoń piasku, So kneeled down the lad, took handful of gravel,
Piekielne wzywał potęgi, And summoned the forces infernal,
Klął się przy świętym księżyca blasku, Upon the holy moonlight he swore,
Lecz czy dochowa przysięgi? But will he to oath his be faitful?

"Dochowaj, strzelcze, to moja rada: "Be faithful, oh hunter, that's my advice,
Bo kto przysięgę naruszy, For whosever the oath sacred breaks,
Ach, biada jemu, za życia biada! Oh, wellaway to him while he lives,
I biada jego złej duszy!" And wellaway when he’s dead!”

To mówiąc dziewka więcej nie czeka, So spake, no more the maiden abides,
Wieniec włożyła na skronie She put her wreath on her head,
I pożegnawszy strzelca z daleka, And, from afar the hunter she’s blessing,
Na zwykłe uchodzi błonie. To fields green comes she away.

Próżno się za nią strzelec pomyka, In vain is hunter following her,
Rączym wybiegom nie sprostał, Can't catch her swiftly a-running,
Znikła jak lekki powiew wietrzyka, As gentle aflatus she faded away,
A on sam jeden pozostał. And all'lone stayed he, thither standing.

Sam został, dziką powraca drogą, All'lone stayed he, wild path a-returning,
Ziemia uchyla się grząska, The quicksand and slush is a-sagging,
Cisza wokoło, tylko pod nogą Silence around, only under his feet
Zwiędła szeleszcze gałązka. A withered twig is a-rustling.

Idzie nad wodą, błędny krok niesie, At the water he's walking, with steps uncertain,
Błędnymi strzela oczyma; With faraway look he is ogling,
Wtem wiatr zaszumiał po gęstym lesie, Swiftly, in thickset wood wind has blown,
Woda się burzy i wzdyma. And waters are seething and ruffling.

Burzy się, wzdyma, Pękają tonie, They're seething, they're ruffling, the mirror is bursting,
O niesłychane zjawiska! O, following phantoms nameless!
Ponad srebrzyste Świtezi błonie A vestal fairness outgushing is
Dziewicza piękność wytryska. Through Świteź' silvery waters
Jej twarz jak róży bladej zawoje Like rose's pale lobes her face appearing,
Skropione jutrzenki łezką; Sprent with a tear of a dawning,
Jako mgła lekka, tak lekkie stroje Light as a mist is the attire
Obwiały postać niebieską The heavenly figure is wearing

"Chłopcze mój piękny, chłopcze mój młody - "My lad o handsome, my lad o youtful,"
Zanuci czule dziewica - The maiden's tenderly humming,
Po co wokoło Świteziu wody " What for art thou, round Świteź waters,
Błądzisz przy świetle księżyca? Must at the moonlight a-roaming?"

"Po co żałujesz dzikiej wietrznicy, "Why are thou for this maid haggard moaning,
Która cię zwabia w te knieje, Who thee in those forests is luring,
Zawraca głowę, rzuca w tęsknicy Troubles thyself, forsakes thou yearning,
I może jeszcze się śmieje? And maybe of thee is a-taunting?"

Daj się namówić czułym wyrazem, "Please, be persuaded with word so tender,
Porzuć wzdychania i żale, Abandon thy sorrow and sighing,
Do mnie tu, do mnie, tu będziem razem, Come hither, to me, we'll hither together,
Po wodnym pląsać krysztale. On water crystal be dancing.

"Czy zechcesz niby jaskółka chybka Would thou as keen as a swallow supple,
Oblicze tylko wód muskać; The water mirror be skimming?
Czy zdrów jak rybka, wesoł jak rybka, Or, as sound as a trout, and as cheerful as trout
Cały dzień ze mną się pluskać. All day with me be a-swimming?

"A na noc w łożu srebrnej topieli And night to spend in silver cradle's deep,
Pod namiotami zwierciadeł Below the watery mirrors
Na miękkiej wodnych lilijek bieli On lilies pale white deeply asleep,
Śród boskich usnąć widziadeł" And dream of the phantoms prodigious"

Wtem z zasłon błysną piersi łabędzie, Swiftly, the swan-like bosom shines bare,
Strzelec w ziemię patrzy skromnie. Down the ashamed hunter's gazing,
Dziewica w lekkim zbliża się pędzie Slightly approaching to him is the maiden
I 'Do mnie - woła - pójdź do mnie' And "come, come to me", she is calling.

I na wiatr lotne rzuciwszy stopy Putting her feet light straight on the wind
Jak tęcza śmiga w krąg wielki, In the air as a rainbow she’s dancing,
To znowu siekąc wodne zatopy, Then, watery mirrors slightly she hit,
Srebrnymi pryska kropelki. With silvery drops she’s a-bursting.

Podbiega strzelec i staje w biegu Runs near the hunter, in place he’s halting,
I chciałby skoczyć, i nie chce; Both wants he to jump and he’s shuffling;
Wtem modra fala prysnąwszy z brzegu Once, the wave blue springs from the shore
Z lekka mu w stopy połechce And lightly his feet is a-tickling.

I tak go łechce, i tak go znęca, It’s so a-tickling, it’s so alluring,
Tak się w nim serce rozpływa, The lad’s heart melting completely,
Jak gdy tajemnie rękę młodzieńca As if his hand already held was
Ściśnie kochanka wstydliwa By a shy lover secretely.

Zapomniał strzelec o swej dziewczynie Forgot the lad of his loved maiden
Przysięgą pogardził świętą, With oath his sacred disdained he,
Na zgubę oślep bieży w głębinie, To abyss blue to his doom he’s rushing,
Nową zwabiony ponętą. With a new seduction allured.
Bieży i patrzy, patrzy i bieży; He’s looking and running, and running and looking,
Niesie go wodne przestworze, The mirror of water him carrying,
Już z dala suchych odbiegł wybrzeży And far he went from the shores dry,
Na średnim igra jeziorze In the lake’s middle he’s dancing.

I już dłoń śnieżną w swej ciśnie dłoni Once, the palm snowy in his hand holds he,
W pięknych licach topi oczy, At the face gorgeous he’s gazing,
Ustami usta różane goni And, with his lips her lips he’s a-chasing
I skoczne okręgi toczy And circles high he’s a-dancing.

Wtem wietrzyk świsnął, obłoczek pryska, Once zephyr’s swishing, the cloud’s a-fading,
Co ją w łudzącym krył blasku, Which hid her with glare illusory;
Poznaje strzelec dziewczynę z bliska: Now this lass well can he distinguish:
Ach, to dziewczyna spod lasku! Ah, it’s the one from the forest!

"A gdzie przysięga? gdzie moja rada? "Where's the oath thy? Where's my advice?
Wszak kto przysięgę naruszy, For whosever the oath sacred breaks,
Ach, biada jemu, za życia biada! Oh, wellaway to him, while he lives,
I biada jego złej duszy! And wellaway when he’s dead!"

"Nie tobie igrać przez srebrne tonie Not thou in the waters deep will be dallying,
Lub nurkiem pluskać w głąb jasną; Not thou in the lake vivid be diving;
Surowa ziemia ciało pochłonie, Crude soil will take the body of thine,
Oczy twe żwirem zagasną. With dirt will be darkened thy eyes".

"A dusza przy tym świadomym drzewie "And spirit of thine, upon this tree conscious,
Niech lat doczeka tysiąca For thousand years will be waiting,
Wiecznie piekielne cierpiąc żarzewie Forever suffering from heat infernal,
Nie ma czym zgasić gorąca". To put it out all unable"

Słyszy to strzelec, błędny krok niesie, So heard the hunter, with steps uncertain,
Błędnymi rzuca oczyma, With faraway look he is ogling,
A wicher szumi po gęstym lesie, And blows the gale in the forest thickset,
Woda się burzy i wzdyma. The water is seething and ruffling.

Burzy, się, wzdyma i wre aż do dna, It's seething, it's ruffling, till bottom's boiling,
Kręconym nurtem pochwyca, Seizing them with current a-whirling,
Roztwiera paszczę otchłań podwodna, The mouth of the lake's abyss is opening,
Ginie z młodzieńcem dziewica. And with a lad a maiden is fading.

Woda się dotąd burzy i pieni, Till now, the water is seething and ruflling;
Dotąd przy świetle księżyca Hitherto, at the moon's light shiny
Snuje się para znikomych cieni: A pair of shadows transient is spunning,
Jest to z młodzieńcem dziewica. This is the lad and the maiden.

Ona po srebrnym pląsa jeziorze, She's dancing on the lake's silvery mirror,
On pod tym jęczy modrzewiem. He's upon this larch a-groaning,
Któż jest młodzieniec? - strzelcem był w borze. Whom was the lad? - a hunter in forest,
A kto dziewczyna? - ja nie wiem. And who is the lass? I don't wit.

W koncu, skoro oryginal nalezy juz do 'dziedzictwa ludzkosci' - to niech nalezy do niego i tlumaczenie ... Choc mam prawa autorskie do tlumaczenia, to dysponuje nimi w sposob bardzo swobodny; kazdy moze to kopiowac, wykorzystywac, publikowac, drukowac, zamieszczac ... PS. Mam na swoim koncie jeszcze pare ... Kilka juz bylo na forum.trojmiasto.pl, jest jeszcze cos, czego nie bylo ... Te, ktorych nie bylo, to nie tlumaczenia, a przerobki, tzw. 'filking' dotyczacy piosenek folkowych ... Np. przerobka slynnej ballady Shady Grove na piosenke przemytnicza (moge zapodac jedna zwrotke:

oryginalne Shady Grove
"Lips as red as the blooming rose
Eyes of the deepest brown
She is the darling of my heart
Sweetest girl in town

Shady Grove, my true love,
Shady Grove, my darling
Shady Grove, my little love
I'm going back to Highland"

moja przerobka:
"Lips as red as the blooming rose
Eyes of the deepest brown
She is the darling of my heart
Best smuggler in the town"

Shady Grove, my true love,
Shady Grove, my darling
Shady Grove, my little love
We'll be rich from smuggling"

(i jak sie podoba??)

Dla mnie to jeden z najciekawszych poetow, taki, do ktorego dziel zawsze wracam z przyjemnoscia, czytam je sobie np. do poduszki ... "Switezianka" bije na glowe 99% fantasy (oprocz Tolkiena)
